If you are strolling in the street on a morning, or any other day (check exact location first), make your way to the local street market. Every village hosts one. All lively, colourful, plenty of traditional food, vegetables and fruit, fish, meat, dairy products, but also clothes, houseware tools.
Wherever you go in Italy, you can’t miss visiting a street market. Picture stalls laden with fruit and veg, boisterous sellers and great fashion bargains, and you’re not far off the truth.
Italian street market is like shopping malls en plain air, on one single floor, swirling around the streets or flooding entire squares.
For the tourist it is an irresistable attraction, for us Italians, however, it’s part and parcel of everyday life: a place where you meet friends, haggle over prices and chat in the local dialect.
The street market isn’t just a place where you buy things cheaply: it’s also where you get in touch with tradition and make up for lost time. On market-days we all act as our parents did when we were young-we talk about what’s happening in the world and sometimes also stick our noses into other people’s business…
As you may have guessed, the word mercato means street market, but what’s a mercato?
he mercato is traditional neighborhood street market that take place in most Italian municipalities and are as ancient as the cities themselves. Small towns tend to have a weekly mercato (on alternating weekdays among bordering towns) in a designated street or square (often called “Piazza Mercato“). Bigger cities instead tend to have several neighborhood mercati, some of which may occur daily (on weekdays and Saturdays) and take place in permanent structures that are either partially or fully covered (mercati coperti).
In the street market, street vendors set up their movable shops to cover a complete range of needs: from food, to clothes, to household items. The stores are generally open from early morning until early afternoon, but in big cities or for special occasions (e.g. patron saint feasts or Christmas celebrations) they may remain open until late. The street market feature products for all budgets, from affordable consumables to high quality designer items. Bargaining is acceptable though not as common as it was in the past, with the newer generations of customers being more used to posted prices.
